Laser Skin Resurfacing

For many years, very little could be done for deep Acne scars or other undesirable deep lines such as the vertical lines on upper Lips (Smoker’s lines)

Eventually, physically sanding the face would create a new fresh new layer of skin; which it did after 28 days of pain and looking terrible. As technology improved a C02 laser became the most common form of resurfacing (or ablation). Unfortunately it also involved 28 days or longer for healing, with the associated risk of infection. These treatments would also cause hypopigmentation (lighter colour) on fair skin and hyper- pigmentation (darker colour) on individuals with darker skin.

Vancouver’s Pender Medi Spa offers a variety of laser services including Laser Skin Resurfacing, which is sometimes referred to as “Fraxel”.

Approximately 6 years ago it was found that by placing a grid on the surface; healing time could be reduced from 28 days to approximately 7 days. Rather than having the skin regenerate from the raw surface below, it would heal from islands of non-ablated skin.

This was a tremendous advantage, although it was still very painful, and could only be used on individuals with fair skin for fear of hyperpigmentation.

Vancouver’s Pender Medi Spa and sister clinic on the North Shore followed this evolving technology very closely. Approximately 4 years ago Cutera developed the Pearl laser, which was ideal for superficial imperfections of the skin. Soon thereafter they released their version of the deeper Pearl Fractional for deep scars, and lines. Cutera utilized a new wavelength that was reported to be less painful.

Dr, Bieg performed a. head to head “split-face” study with the Fraxel against the Cutera Pearl fractional laser. Dr. Bieg, the medical director of Vancouver’s Pender Medi Spa, found the Cutera system to be less painful and more efficacious.

As a result Pender Medi Spa and her sister Skincare Centre on the North Shore purchased the first Pearl Fractional in Canada.

Thus for mild skin damage, Pender Medi Spa would utilize the regular Pearl with only a few days of downtime For extreme Sun, Environmental or previous Acne damaged Skin; Vancouver’s Pender Medi Spa recommends using the Cutera Pearl Fractional laser system. The Cutera Pearl Fractional creates little pinpoint lesions in the Skin to create a dramatically younger Skin surface. The Skin is completely refreshed with a dramatic improvement in discoloration, Acne scars, pore size, and fine lines.

The downtime for Pender Med Spa’s Pearl Fractional varies between 4 and 10 days, depending on the depth of the treatment

For superficial irregularities the Pearl alone will improve these imperfections. For deeper scars and more skin damage the Fractionated Pearl is preferred. At Pender Medi Spa using both in one treatment is called the Pearl Fusion, and provides excellent skin resurfacing results.
